This section covers parts of modern history that are the underlying reasons for social change today. The first region identified is seen in the handout on India, Past, Present and Future that also includes the political problems in Kashmir

Today China is one of the most influential countries in the world. It's modern history began with Chairman Mao and the Great Leap Forward which led to Mao's Proletarian Revolution poster showing the changes and then the era of Deng Xiaoping and Economic Reform in China. To close this section on China I have created an additional handout on Modern China.
In the Middle East, oil has become a vital resource and also a cause for major crisis between nations. To better understand the situation I have created a document called What is OPEC and who are the member nations? To attempt to keep the peace in the region, one has to examine the role of the Middle East and the United Nations. Finally, the global conflicts in the region led to the attacks on September 11 and to understand some of the causes we have to ask Who was Osama bin Laden?
Many of the problems faced in Africa today stem from European imperialism. To examine the situations one can look at the White-rule in South Africa and the story of Rhodesia and the handout on Apartheid. In addition to these documents, I have added a political cartoon on Apartheid followed by a brief summary of the Apartheid Laws of South Africa and a presentation on Nelson Mandela, a look at his life.
Finally, to close out this unit, I have created a lesson on Genocide - A Global Concern which is another key component to the enduring issues essay.
