This section covers the section semester of my 11th. Grade Elective Course. The following link is the Course Syllabus which highlights some of the major topics that will be covered in this section.
Economic Principles
America is a land of business and entrepreneurship and these principles are found in the What is capitalism handout. It is very important that every student understands the basic Economics Definitions list as these words will be used repeatedly throughout the semester. This one-page document opens to a diagram of The Business Cycle which validates the definition in the above handout.
A history of the Principles of Economics is found in the following lessons that are handouts on Thomas Robert Malthus and John Maynard Keynes whose works created ideas, theories and applications for modern society.

How a Business Works
This section begins with a document in the form of a table showing the different types of Business Organizations a key document to understand if you think that someday you are gong to start your own company. The next, longer version, covers the different Types of Businesses that can be formed and includes their advantages and disadvantages. Key questions to consider are also found at the end of the handout. To end this unit, I have created a short handout covering the Top Ten Reasons Small Businesses Fail which also includes brief descriptions of what can go wrong.
How a business works is best seen with a supermarket. This presentation covers The Perils of a Supermarket and how they want you to spend more of your hard-earned money in their store. Buyer Beware!
How "big" is big business? Maybe this cynical cartoon explains to the working class people why management takes all.
Personal Finance

The handout on Scarcity, Choice, and Opportunity Cost, the chart on the Demand Cycle Phases and the Factors of Production handout covers what goes on in business that motivates us to spend our hard-earned money.

What is the difference between using a Debit Card and a Credit Card? The answers with explanations can be found with this handout. In addition to this lesson a very important factor for one's future is a person's credit score. This handout called Credit Basics and Scores discusses the positives and negatives of a good credit score and future financial success.
Not everything we buy works perfectly and the following exercise is called Solving Consumer Problems. It is a class assignment that covers real life events and the actions that we must take to rectify such situations. This link opens to the Personal Business Letter template sample.
Believe it or not, in this world of "plastic money," we still need to know How to Write a Check correctly and this presentation is so valuable to prevent forgery and making sure that your bank account is never overdrawn. A handout with assignments on Financial Planning and Budgeting and a short Budgeting lesson will go a long way to ones future financial security. However, looming in the near future is life after high school and many will be surprised about this unit on the Hidden Costs of College, fees and expenses that are other than the standard price of four-year tuition.

The Job Interview Process
Unless you have won the lottery, we all have to work for a living someday. How much and the way that you are paid is the subject of this handout called the Difference Between Wages and Salary. Getting for first or any other job is a skill and the following lessons will help guide you through the process. Another important factor about salary and work conditions is illustrated in this handout called Equal Opportunity Employment.
The handouts on Interview Mistakes and the most common errors made by applicants and the Interview Questions most commonly asked, once fully understood, will help calm your nerves and enable you to breeze through the process. Now that you have mastered these techniques, put yourself on the other side of the desk with this short assignment called Who gets hired? It is based on two interviews for the same job. It is from the interviewer's point of view.
Special Assignment: The 60-Second Elevator Speech handout.

International Economics
A good place to start this section of the course is by looking at the presentation on Balance of Trade. It focuses on the role of both imports and exports within the nation's economy.
To supplement this lesson is a short video called Is Free Trade Worth the Cost? and it explains why we need international trade in simple terms.

In addition, the following lessons involve some additional key components of macroeconomics. We live in a truly global society and how much we rely on this concept is seen by the handout called what is meant by Supply Chain Management? Within this document is an excellent video that uses a water bottle as an example of supply change management.
To illustrate how this system works, I have created two documents that answer the following questions: Where does a Snickers Bar come from? and where is your iPhone made? How it all gets to our local stores is the focus of this important What is Logistics presentation. This presentation focuses on one transportation and logistics service, the Trucking Industry.
To further validate the use of Logistics, this link opens to a video created by AIMS UK called What is Logistics Management?
All of the above are linked to the master handout on International Trade that describes many of the required functions to run a business globally. The price of imported goods depends on the manufacturing price, the shipping costs and then the tariff and rate of duty. This link goes to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule that gives a detailed description and import duties for every product that comes into the United States. To sum it all up, the Development and Globalization handout helps us better understand how the world's economics systems work today.
